When there is an airbag recall, we pay attention and so should you. Your safety is a priority.
Roughly 41.6 million vehicles equipped with approximately 56 million defective Takata airbags are under recall because these airbags can be deployed causing serious injury and even death. Three years later the Insurance Journal says that as many as 1/3 of those faulty airbags are still on the road. And that is not what will be added to the recall. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says additional airbags are scheduled to be recalled by December bringing the total number of faulty airbags to between 65 million and 70 million. In August, an article in the Columbus Dispatch states that the are as many as 600,000 vehicles with recalled airbags driving the roads in Ohio alone.
Aging Inflators
The issue is that the inflators grow more dangerous as they get older because ammonium nitrate deteriorates due to high humidity and cycles from hot temperatures to cold. The most dangerous inflators are in areas of the South along the Gulf of Mexico.
Affected vehicles include models made by Ford, Chrysler, Honda, General Motors, BMW, Daimler, Ferrari, Infinity, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Scion, Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen. Just to name a few. The recalls cover model years dating back to 2000.
Unrepaired Inflators
In a statement, NHTSA said that it is concerned about the number of unrepaired inflators and mindful of the progress being made by many manufacturers to track down vehicle owners and complete repairs. This is especially true for older vehicles that pose a higher safety risk because they are most difficult to locate.
